INTRODUCTION
The Phonies are Sydney's fakest hip hop band, bringing the freshest Casio powered smash hop and boogie box beats on offer. They're the best dressed band in town with a modern sound for young adults.
Influences: The Beach Boys, Roots Manuva, Tipper, J-Dilla, Guns and Roses, Frankie Valley and The Four Seasons, Devo and Steely Dan.
BIOGRAPHY
The Phonies have made an impact playing shows in nothing but speedos and chappy caps at Woodford Folk Festival, Peats Ridge, Newtown and Surry Hills Festivals. Their theatrical live shows with backup singers, lifeguards and even Referee Lampshade, has helped them build a strong following in Sydney. Since releasing their previous single Crayon Factory they've been listed as a featured artist on Triple J's Unearthed and Home & Hosed.
The lads have just completed their first east coast tour, playing shows in Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Byron Shire, Canberra and Wollongong. They also spent a week in Byron recording pump new tracks and some classic burners, so look out for another single release tour later this year and an album in early 2011.
PRESS QUOTES
"Though it’s easy to call The Phonies a hip-hop outfit, they feel like more than that. There’s elements of Vampire Weekend afro-beat, the melodic ear of Outkast and the harmonies of ‘60s pop… …bright as a summer’s day and as addictive as top-grade crack."
Dom Alessio - Triple J
"The Phonies have really developed a big following over the last few years and it is easy to see why. They have an amazing energy on stage with a tongue-in-cheek attitude that the kids go crazy for."
